A number of architectural alterations are being made to the state capital of Stuttgart as part of the Stuttgart-Ulm railway project. These changes include the construction of a new, underground, eight-track through station with a train shed that measures approximately 420 metres long and 80 metres wide. The load-bearing, reinforced concrete shell roof over this space is held up by pillars known as ‘chalice supports’. These supports are formed in such away that they underpin a horseshoe-shaped section of the flat shell roof above. Openings at the tops of the chalices are covered by diaphanous gridshells known as ‘light eyes’ that are made from glass and steel. Ventilation flaps in these gridshells provide natural ventilation and climate control by exchanging air with the station’s underground tunnels. Special steel and glass gridshells are also being placed in one of the chalice supports, by the tower of Stuttgart’s Bonatz building and by the entrance to the ‘Staatsgalerie’ suburban railway station. These airy, lightweight, generously proportioned structures serve as entranceways that allow passengers to gain access to the platforms below.
