For nearly a century, the historically listed Bonatzbau building in Stuttgart has welcomed passengers to the city’s central railway station and made an inimitable mark on the urban landscape of the town. As part of the on-going Stuttgart-Ulm rail project, plans are now afoot to bring the structure in line with the demands of the modern age. Although the exterior of the Bonatzbau will be preserved, the interior of the building will be almost totally gutted to make way for a conventional load bearing structure with up to four storeys, a basement, and even deeper foundations than the Bonatzbau itself. This new building will be erected within the original structure’s walls and directly attached to the inner face of its existing shell. Upon completion, the project will grant passengers level access to the railway platforms that are being constructed in the new underground station right next door.
