The new central bus station in Hanover enables a new definition of a place hitherto lacking a clear architectural concept. Like a light and gentle cloud the roof protects from the weather and invites to fall into imaginations. The main roof design is simple and convincing. The dynamic design of the bottom view corresponds to the dynamic of the city. The size of the roof structure is 1,400 sqm. The structure itself consists of orthogonal grid of welded hollow steel profiles. The grid rests upon round steel columns which have a maximum distance of 12 m to each other. The top edge of the roof is horizontal to and 6,5 m above the floor. The bottom edges of the profiles change the size and form and create an impression of a dynamic and wavy bottom view. The design is not only aesthetically favourable but also consists of a technically optimized supporting structure. The project was awarded a recognition at the German Steel Engineering Award 2016.
