structural engineering of the steel construction
The ‚Mansueto Library‘ is an extension to the main library of the University of Chicago (Regenstein Library), which as one of the biggest libraries in the world is home to 4.4 million books. The storage rooms of the new building are located below ground down to a depth of 15 m, whilst above ground the building is characterised by its glass-covered steel grid shell. The geometrically constructed translational shell formed by two curved beams is 36.5 m wide, 73 m long and features a mesh size of 2 m. This spans across the public areas on the ground floor. A row of so-called ‚cubicles‘ is located in the interior of the building; the cubicles are made entirely of glass and are designed for use as study rooms. A 20-m long, glazed steel bridge connects the extension with the existing building.
