Werner Sobek and Schaltraum Architektur, an architectural firm from Hamburg, have won a competition to build a multi-storey car park next to the thermal springs overlooking Lake Constance in Überlingen. The building is the first structure to be built for the city’s State Garden Exhibition in 2020. The future plan is to form a grand entrance to the west side of town. Werner Sobek is supporting the architects with specialist planning for the building‘s loadbearing timber structures and building services technology.
The current shortage of city-centre parking and the municipal council’s transport concept from July 2015 – which uses Bahnhofstraße, a main thoroughfare, as the principal access route to the west part of town – both had to be taken into account during the planning process. The new parking spaces also needed to be accessible to a wide variety of users, including visitors to the historic city centre and lakeside promenade and guests of the thermal spa. These considerations allow the project to address a key public concern, namely the reduction of private city-centre transport in general and traffic searching for parking spaces in particular. The new multi-storey car park also facilitates and promotes the transition from motorised private transport to local public transport and environmentally friendly bicycles.
