At the start of the 2015/16 opera season, Stuttgart artist rosalie installed a light sculpture of approx. 42 x 14.5 m in size on the facade of the Hamburg State Opera. The installation, which is shaped like a curtain being drawn back along its diagonal axis, constantly changes colour. During opera performances, the work bathes the surrounding urban space and the foyer of the opera house in a changing spectrum of varied, iridescent colour. The light installation is inactive during the day. Werner Sobek assisted the project by designing a supporting substructure that was mounted on the exterior of the building’s facade. The construction was designed so that it can be completely removed and dismantled after use, leaving behind no sign of its presence whatsoever. All of its component parts can subsequently also be reused or employed for other purposes. The substructure consists of a stabilising supporting construction made of steel and timber profiles from which a tensile textile net is suspended. The installation’s looping strands of fibre optic cord were woven in and out of this net.
