Cologne Airport – ICE Station

Werner Sobek was responsible for the structural engineering of the steel structures for the glass canopy and stairway structures of the underground railway platform at Cologne-Bonn Airport. The supporting structure of the barrel-shaped roofing with dimensions of 156 x 38 m consists of parallel, extremely slender steel arches that are stabilised in the plane of the arches by means of cable bracing.

The station, which was built as part of the Cologne-Rhine/Main high-speed rail line and opened in June 2004, is served by intercity express, suburban and regional trains. After Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, Cologne-Bonn was the third German airport with a connection to the ICE network.
