Altar Freiburg

As part of his second official visit to Germany, Pope Benedict XVI held a large outdoor mass in Freiburg i.Br. on 25.9.2011. The venue was a green area at the Freiburg airfield. As protection against the weather, Werner Sobek designed a covered altar island – as he had done for the Pope’s visit to Munich in 2006.

Recyclable Altar Island for the Pope

Integrated into the altar island was a sacristy for the Holy Father as well as various other side rooms for altar servers and other staff. A textile roof hovered over the altar island at a height of about 15 m, protecting the area from all kinds of weather.

The construction of the altar island was designed in such a way that most of the materials could be reused or recycled after the mass.
