With its comprehensive collection and widely diverse exhibitions, the Sprengel Museum in Hanover is considered one of the most important museums exhibiting 20th and 21st century art. The first construction stage designed by the architects Peter and Ursula Trint as well as Dieter Quast was opened in 1979. In 1992 a second stage in its construction saw an extension added to the original building. This included the addition of its large auditorium, which is still in use today as a popular venue for many external events. And it was also the time when the hall for temporary exhibitions was added. The second extension drawn up by architects‘ office Meili and Peter essentially consists of two elements. These are an enlarged foyer and a new exhibitions wing, which are designed to both modernize and increase the size of the museum. Both new parts of the building are structurally distinct entities separated by a joint and, as a consequence, they both have independent stability systems. The foyer consists of a flowing ramp which links the different levels of the new entrance with the existing building and the new exhibition wing. Measuring approx. 17 x 20 m the unsupported ramp spans the entire area where events are held. Leading off from the foyer, the south-facing exhibition wing consists of a basement level and a ground floor level as well as an upper floor that projects past the outside walls of the ground floor level in three directions. The structure is formed from steel-reinforced concrete. This made it possible to design and build the supporting roof structures from steel thanks to the reduced structural fire safety specifications.
In 2017 the project was awarded the prestigious Architektur Preis Beton (Architecture Award Concrete).
