For several years, the Sparkasse Group has pursued the goal of becoming more sustainable at all levels of their business. For that reason, their aim is comprehensively to renovate the Sparkasse buildings currently in operation. The biggest challenge in doing so is the heterogeneity of the various structures. The Sparkasse building in Gross-Umstadt shows the potential of such a holistic renovation process. As well as questions of urban design and building services, the planning stage took such aspects as user comfort, internal flow and the configuration of workspaces into consideration. Employees were actively involved in the planning process. The restored building achieved the extremely economical Passivhaus Standard (EnerPHit) and, moreover, was certified in accordance with the DGNB. A monitoring programme is used to optimise operations. Following the renovations, the building emits up to 80% less CO2 and offers the highest levels of comfort for both employees and customers alike. In 2016 the project won the DMK Award for Sustainable Building.
