The Harvard ArtLab is a 850 sqm collaborative working space for students. The structure consists of five areas varying in size, each one dedicated to different functions: Hub, Group Studio, Video/Sound, Workshop, and Office/Utilities. The five areas form a pinwheel and patchwork-like configuration. The building is bound by North Harvard St. on the North side, and by Future Academic Way to the West. The Artlab position has been investigated through multiple trial studies to examine the impact of its location, foundation system as well as superstructure on the construction costs. The structural system of the project consists of concentrically braced frames as lateral load resisting system, a set of trusses for the long span conditions, wide flange beams and of columns.
