Stuttgart 21 – A look behind the scenes of a mega construction site
A special view – our project managers Angelika Schmid and Torsten Noack gave members of the aed e.V. exclusive insights into the planning and execution of the new Stuttgart main station during a guided tour of the construction site. The old terminus station (lying above ground) is currently being completely rebuilt and transformed into an underground through station. The roof structure of the new hall consists of a shell structure which is supported by chalice-shaped columns made of concrete. These are not only essential design elements; they also provide natural lighting and ventilation for the new underground station. Due to their size and complex geometry, the chalic-shaped columns are among the most demanding concrete structures ever realised worldwide!
We are pleased to have been able to support the work of aed with this guided tour. The aim of this non-profit association is to promote and to render more visible the design potential in the Stuttgart region. The association is aimed at engineers, architects, designers – and everyone else who is interested in design topics. More information can be found at: https://www.aed-stuttgart.de/
