City authorities in the eastern German city of Dresden have voted for an alternative project to build a bridge over the Elbe River to assuage the concerns of UNESCO. The UN cultural organization has threatened to withdraw the World Heritage Site status of a 20-kilometre stretch of the river through the picturesque city. UNESCO had called for the original building plan to be halted and for an alternative to be found, warning that it would withdraw the area’s status in a move without precedent in the organization’s history. Out of the six proposal resulting from the invited competition, two designs won a first prize. The design proposed by Werner Sobek was one of these two.
