Funded by the European Union, the Rethink Athens project envisages transforming the central axes and squares of the City of Athens with the specific aim of improving the quality of public spaces and user comfort. Central aspects still in the process of being completed include traffic control and access points to public transport, the surface materials used on roads and squares, creating new green areas and watering existing green areas. In addition to design aspects, improving the microclimate of the city is a major objective. Consequently, the green areas and surface materials are extremely important aspects. This approach is designed to prevent urban heat islands developing in summer and reduce the ambient temperature (and the resulting requirements to cool adjacent buildings). At the same time, this will improve the thermal well-being of the city‘s residents.
