The Dornier Museum integrates three different facilities within a single structure: an exhibition relating the company’s history (including a cinema), an aeroplane hall as well as a forum for staging ceremonies and events. The structure supporting the museum hall, the porches and projecting sections form a frame system that is made of welded steel beam profiles. Sliding folding doors as wide as the building at both ends of the museum hall allow exhibits to be brought into the hall and ease its conversion to a hangar at any time this is required. The annexes on the south-side of the museum hall are designed as steel-reinforced concrete shells. These take advantage of the favourable effects offered by the dome shape to bear the not inconsiderable vertical loads resulting from the covering of earth. Separated from the main load-bearing structure there is an exhibition box housed inside the museum hall as an independent structural body; this design feature allows it to be dismantled rapidly when converting the hall for other uses.
