Two new utility buildings were built on campus of the University of Chicago according to plans drawn up by the architect company Murphy/Jahn; the buildings supply the different facilities of the university with compressed-air, steam and chilled water. Due to the restricted amount of space available on the campus the various technical apparatus had to be placed above one another across several storeys in the building; this placed increased demands on the planning of the structure and the facade as did the client’s desire for the technical installations to fulfil aesthetic engineering criteria.
