Cologne Airport – Terminal M

The new terminal building, realised between 2003 and 2004 according to plans by the architectural office Jahn (Chicago), expands Cologne-Bonn Airport by 8,800 m² gross floor area. Werner Sobek was responsible for the structural engineering and facade planning for this project.

Hall Construction Made of Filigree Arched Trusses

A new handling hall was created on an area of approx. 130 x 30 m in order to cope with the increasing number of passengers, especially in the low-cost-carrier sector.

The hall construction consists of filigree arched trusses made of welded steel profiles, which span the departure level without supports and are supported on a reinforced concrete table via pendulum supports. The horizontal bracing is provided only by individual, diagonally arranged pendulum rods.

Another special feature is the extremely transparent facade construction of the departure hall and the passenger and connecting bridges. This transparency is essentially achieved by the slender substructure of the faCade structure as well as by the glass holders arranged only in the pane joints.
