Germany’s Federal Horticultural Show (BUGA) 2011 takes place in the city of Koblenz. In close cooperation with the Austrian ropeway manufacturer Doppelmayr, Werner Sobek designed key elements for the ropeway which connects the Castle of Ehrenbreitstein with the city centre. Werner Sobek was not only responsible for the graphic design and the interior of the cabins , but also for the membrane panels which serve as weather-protecting panels for the upper and lower stations. The covering is made of 1 mm mesh fabric which spans over a filigree steel bearing structure. The translucent membrane allows plenty of natural daylight into the stations. During night time the stations turn to illuminated objects floating above the ground. The roofs of the upper and lower stations follow the same design principles, but were each adjusted to the local situation. The roofs seem to float above the stations. From the visitors’ view the structure seems to disappear upwards and it mirrors the ephemeral character of the building. The stations are designed to be easily dismantled after the show.
