The new Schmalz reception building at their company headquarters in Glatten provides the business with a distinguished new point of entrance. The architects designed a modern building with a broad glass façade, an open interior layout and numerous daylight-flooded rooms. The new communication centre consists of three storeys and expands the Schmalz complex with a generously proportioned conference area, exhibition rooms, a client meeting point, a canteen and modern working spaces for employees.

The site on which the reception building was constructed lies right between an historic old building and a modern manufacturing facility. The height of the new structure takes its cue from the upper edges of the existing buildings. Its design also incorporates the strict structural lines of the adjacent edifices. The spaces between the buildings set the new structure a respectful distance apart from its neighbours, while also serving to underline its significance in the overall architectural ensemble.

A particularly efficient energy concept was implemented during the construction process. Water from the river Glatt is used to cool the building, and a ventilation system with heat recovery capabilities creates a pleasant interior climate. Thanks to the modern energy concept, the building’s overall energy efficiency is 50 per cent lower than the value prescribed in the Energy Savings Directive (Energieeinsparverordnung, EnEV). The new building is connected to the local heat network of the company’s own heating system. A photovoltaic installation is located on the roof and on the raised walkway between the new structure and the existing edifices.

In 2016, the building received the Exemplary Building Award of the Order of Architects of Baden-Württemberg for the region of Calw and Freudenstadt.
