The Danish team of architects Schmidt/Hammer/Lassen won the international competition for a new lecture hall building at the RWTH University in Aachen, Germany. The design comprises two separate building blocks that are united by an airy, fully glazed atrium. The overall surface area of the building complex is 13,600 m². Central idea of the victorious design is the contrast between the introverted lecture halls and the open zone connecting these lecture halls. The building complex offers several squares and terraces of various sizes that can be used for social activities and knowledge sharing.
