Intended to be the most sustainable building in the Netherlands, the Rotterdam Stadskantoor design won the 1st Prize with special distinction for its sustainability concept. Through a holistic sustainability assessment, starting with microclimate analysis, the building form was optimized for daylighting, thermal comfort, energy use and water conservation. With water conservation fixtures and rainwater collection, the building is designed to save over 1.800.000 litres potable water per year, achieving a 51% reduction in water use compared to standard practices. With semitransparent insulation panelling in the exterior cladding, the façade ensures high thermal comfort and simultaneously provides adequate daylighting for the office spaces.
